Chessable Masters 2022 R1-4: Wei Yi takes an early sole lead

by Shahid Ahmed - 20/05/2022

Harikrishna and Praggnanandhaa made an identical start of 5.0/12 in Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters 2022. Both of them scored a win each against Aryan Tari (NOR), drew two games and lost only one. Pragg drew with the current tournament leader Wei Yi in the first round. The youngster finished the day with a draw against Sweden no.1 Nils Grandelius. Vidit Gujrathi drew all four of his games. Wei Yi (CHN) is followed by three players at 8.0/12. They are - Ding Liren (CHN), Anish Giri (NED) and Magnus Carlsen (NOR). All four of them are undefeated so far. Round 5 starts tonight at 9:30 p.m. IST.

Vidit makes an unbeaten start

Apart from the current top four on the points table, Vidit Gujrathi is the only other player who is undefeated so far. He drew with Harikrishna, Gawain Jones (ENG), David Anton Guijarro (ESP) and Ding Liren (CHN).

Wei Yi has taken an early sole lead 10.0/12

Round 3: Praggnanandhaa - Tari: 3-0

Praggnanandhaa scored his first and only win of the day against Aryan Tari (NOR).

Position after 19...Ra6

Praggnanandhaa found a very nice way to seize his positional advantage 20.Bxf6 gxf6 21.Qe3 Ng6 22.h4 Raa8 23.g3 Bc8 24.h5 Nf8 25.Nh4. Black's position is so paralyzed that there is no way to save this game.

Round 4: Tari - Harikrishna: 0-3

Aryan Tari blundered in a seemingly equal double rook and bishop endgame against Pentala Harikrishna.

Position after 39.b4

Find out why 39.b4 is a blunder. White can afford to give up the exchange 39.Rg3 Bxa4 40.Kxa4 Rb4+ 41.Ka3 and White is doing absolutely fine.
