The Finals of Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 season starts tonight. Tour champion, Magnus Carlsen will be joined by Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Liem Quang Le, Wesley So, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi and Anish Giri. Four players - Carlsen, So, Praggnanandhaa and Giri will compete from SHACK15 in San Francisco, California in USA, while the other four will play remotely in a unique online and in-person hybrid round-robin tournament. California Calling the Champions

Magnus Carlsen won the Champions Chess Tour 2021 in a dominating fashion. Can he repeat the same feat this time again?

Schedule

All eight players will play a round-robin tournament. Each match will be played each day, consisting of four games. The winner will be the player who accrues the most points and cash overall.

All games will start from 1:30 a.m. IST from 15th to 21st November 2022.

The Finalists

The Meltwater Champions Chess Tour 2022 champion Magnus Carlsen will be eyeing his fifth victory of this season. He will be joined by the former World Fischer Random champion, Wesley So who will be making his tour debut in this year. R Praggnanandhaa and Anish Giri will be aiming for their first tournament win of the season. Jan-Krzysztof Duda won the Aimchess Rapid last month, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov was the runner-up. They will be joined by the former World Blitz champion, Liem Le Quang and Julius Baer Generation Cup runner-up, Arjun Erigaisi who beat Carlsen at Aimchess Rapid for the very first time.

Prizes

The total prize fund of the Tour is $1,600,000. The total prize fund of the Finals is $210,000. US$ 7500 can be won for a match in four games. In case of tie-breaks, winner gets $5000 and the other player gets $2500.

Time Control

• Rapid - 15 minutes per game + 10-second increment.

• Blitz - 5 minutes per game + 3-second increment.

• Armageddon - White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4, with no increments. If the game is drawn Black wins the match.

 

No draw offers/agreements are allowed before both sides have completed their 40th move, except in cases prescribed by the Laws of Chess.
