Utsab Chatterjee clinches 6th Sant Adria Open 2024
IM Utsab Chatterjee scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 6th Sant Adria International Open Group A (≥1950) 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. 12-year-old Siddharth Singh (USA) scored 7/9 to finish second. FM Carlos Alberto Chavez Suarez (CUB), CM Vaibhav Jayant Raut, CM Vedant Pimpalkhare and Elm Catalan Monteagudo (ESP) scored 6/9 each. They were placed third to sixth respectively. Utsab defeated both runners-up in Round 2 and 6 respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was €3030, €2100 in Group A. The top three prizes were €700, €400 and €300 along with a trophy each. Ambarish Sharma, Anustoop Biswas, CM Barath Kalyan M and WFM Vrushali Umesh Deodhar scored 5.5/9 each to be placed from seventh to tenth respectively. IM Utsab Chatterjee was the sole leader 7/8, going into the final round. He was a full point ahead of others. A draw would have made ahim a clear champion. That's exactly what he did against Ambarish Sharma to become the champion. Siddharth Singh (USA) defeated FM Carlos Alberto Chavez Suarez (CUB) to finish second, Carlos was placed third. Utsab went on to score his maiden GM-norm at 25th Sants Open in Barcelona, Spain in the following month.

IM Utsab Chatterjee (2289) made a nice sacrifice 19.Rxg6! Black obviously cannot take it as 19...fxg6 20.Bxg6+ Bf7 21.Qd7# So, CM Vaibhav Jayant Raut (2101) opted for 19...Bxc5 20.Bxc6+ bxc6 21.Rxe6+ fxe6 22.Qd7+ Kd8 23.Nxc5 and White went on to win the game in the next few moves.








A total of 31 players including an IM took part in the Open A (≥1950) tournament from seven countries across the world. Open B (≤1949) witnessed the participation of 49 players. The tournaments were organized by CE Sant Adrià from 11th to 19th August 2024 at Building Fiveller in Sant Adria, Barcelona, Spain. The time control was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment.
