Sinquefield Cup R6: Gukesh keeps playing exciting chess

by Shahid Ahmed - 26/08/2024

R Praggnanandhaa drew with the world champion, Ding Liren quickly in Round 6 of Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup 2024. D Gukesh keeps fighting every single game. He played enterprising chess against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). However, there was no clear path for him to earn a full point. Alireza Firouzja (FRA) drew with Wesley So (USA) to maintain his sole lead 4/6. Ian Nepomniachtchi fell for a very common idea in the Sicilian Dragon. He made a mistake which club level players make, allowing Fabiano Caruana (USA) to score a win. Both Caruana and So are now at 3.5/6, a half point behind the sole leader. Round 7 starts today at 1 p.m. local time, 11:30 p.m. IST. Photo: Lennart Ootes/Grand Chess Tour

Praggnanandhaa makes a comfortable draw against Ding Liren

Perhaps D Gukesh's approach towards the World Championship and Olympiad is the best - fight in every single game. Test himself against various strong opponents in a variety of situations, as he has played very few times against some of the world-class opponents.

Gukesh - Vachier-Lagrave: 0.5-0.5

D Gukesh (2766) played only one Classical rated game against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA, 2721) which was last month at Superbet Classic. That ended in a draw. This time, Gukesh was pushing for a win.

Position after 41...g4

Computer recommends going for 42.a6 directly without trading pawns on g4. Gukesh opted for the latter and the game eventually ended in a draw. Find out the difference between playing 42.a6 directly and after 42.hxg4 hxg4 43.a6 which happened in the game.

Nepomniachtchi - Caruana: 0-1

Ian Nepomniachtchi (2767) made an incorrect pawn push in the Sicilian Dragon. He fell for a thematic attack, something club level players fall for.

Position after 18.g5

18.g5? invited a typical idea which is quite common in the Dragon. Try to find it. The surprising thing is a 2700+ falling for this idea.
