European Club Cup 2025 R3: World Champion Gukesh makes a beautiful exchange sac

The World Champion, D Gukesh played his first game at 40th European Club Chess Cup 2025 in the third round. He made a beautiful exchange sacrifice against GM Sergei Movsesian of Sigil Fund Pardubice. Gukesh converted his long-term advantage and went on to win the game. His team Superchess registered their victory with a 5.5-0.5 score. SV Werder Bremen got whitewashed by the top seed Bayegan Pendik chess sports club 0-6. Second seeded, Alkaloid defeated Schachfreunde Berlin 1903 by 4-2. SG Riehen lost to Novy Bor 1.5-4.5. Among the Women, the top seed, Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo defeated the defending champion, Tajfun SK Ljubljana by a minimum margin 2.5-1.5. Gukesh, Nihal, Arjun and Aravindh score

GM Pentala Harikrishna and GM Abhimanyu Puranik were rested in Round 3. GM D Gukesh, GM Nihal Sarin, GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Aravindh Chithambaram won their respective games and their team won the matches too.

SV Werder Bremen got whitewashed 0-6 by Bayegan Pendik chess sports. GM Anish Giri (2759), GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2742), GM Richard Rapport (2724), GM Nihal Sarin (2700), GM Mustafa Yilmaz (2591) and GM Emre Can (2552) won their respective games against GM Bobby Cheng (2596), IM Nikolas Wachinger (2456), IM Collin Colbow (2435), IM Spartak Grigorian (2424), IM Jari Reuker (2390) and FM Lara Schulze (2319) respectively.

Alkaloid - Schachfreunde Berlin 1903: 4-2

GM Arjun Erigaisi (2773), GM Wei Yi (2754) and GM Aravindh Chithambaram (2711) scored the wins for Alkaloid against IM Lukas Dotzer (2463), IM Jonasz Baum (2446) and IM Johannes Florstedt (2413) respectively. IM Emil Schmidek (2427) won the lone game from Schachfreunde Berlin 1903 against GM Yangyi Yu (2720). The remaining two games ended in draws.

Arjun - Lukas

Position after 20.Nc6

Arjun forced a knight trade when he played 20.Nc6. Black was not forced to take on c6. The game continued 20...Qb6+ 21.Kh1 Nc8 would have been a better choice than N7xc6 which enabled the creation of a passed on c6 22.dxc6+- White went on to use the passed c6-pawn to his advantage and win the game.

GM Vincent Keymer (2755), GM Nils Grandelius (2645) and GM David Anton Guijarro (2631) won their respective games for Novy Bor Chess Club against GM Markus Ragger (2567), GM Ognjen Cvitan (2387) and FM Dorian Jaeggi (2327). The remaining three games ended in draws including GM Vidit Gujrathi (2716) who missed all his opportunities to win against IM Jonas Rosner (2431).

Vidit found 51.Rxf7+! Bxf7 52.Qg7+ Ke8 53.Ba3? instead White needed to find Bf6. White got few more chances but he missed them and the game eventually ended in a draw.

Superchess - Sigil Fund Pardubice: 5.5-0.5

The reigning World Champion, GM D Gukesh (2752), GM Parham Maghsoodloo (2697), GM Alexey Sarana (2661), GM Daniel Dardha (2605) and GM Constantin Lupulescu (2577) of Superchess won against GM Sergei Movsesian (2600), FM Jachym Nemec (2448), FM Bayarjavkhlan Delgerdalai (2376), Pavel Stehno (2305) and FM Radek Bujnoch (2247) of Sigil Fund Pardubice. GM Jorden van Foreest (2697) conceded the sole draw against GM Zbynek Hracek (2539).

Gukesh made a beautiful exchange sacrifice 16.Rxd7! It gave him a long-term advantage. 16...Nxd7 17.Rxb7 Nb6 18.Ne5 0-0 19.Nxc6 Nxc4 20.Bc5 White went on to use his minor pieces to win the game eventually.

Women: Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo - Tajfun SK Ljubljana: 2.5-1.5

The top seed of the Women's tournament, Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo defeated the defending champion, Tajfun SK Ljubljana by 2.5-1.5. IM Alina Kashlinskaya (2450) scored the decisive victory over IM Vantika Agrawal (2377). The FIDE Women's World Cup 2025 winner, GM Divya Deshmukh (2498) was held to a draw by GM Nana Dzagnidze (2496).

Prizes

The total prize fund is €40000, €26000 in Open and €14000 in Women. The top three prizes in Open are - €8000, €6000 and €4000. For Women, they are - €5500, €3500 and €2000. Individual board prizes on each board €500.

Schedule

Every day round starts at 3 p.m. local time, 5:30 p.m. IST from 19th to 24th October 2025. The final round on 25th October starts 2 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST. The seven-round Swiss system tournament has a time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. The tournament will be held in Rhodes, Greece.
